Travelling with a baby or toddler: a planning and packing guide

2 June 2026 6 min read

Naps, gear, and keeping routines on the road — a practical guide to holidaying with the under-threes.

Holidaying with a baby or toddler is entirely doable — it just rewards planning. The aim isn't to recreate home, but to protect the few things that keep small children (and therefore everyone) happy: sleep, food and a bit of routine.

Protect the nap

A well-rested toddler is a different child. Choose a stay with blackout blinds and a separate room for naps where you can, and try to keep at least one nap close to the usual time. A familiar sleep sack or comforter from home does more than any amount of new toys.

What to confirm before you book

  • A real travel cot — ask for a photo and the make if it matters to you.
  • A high chair, or space to bring your own travel one.
  • Stair gates and an enclosed garden if your toddler is on the move.
  • Laundry facilities — you will use them more than you think.

Smart packing

  • A lightweight travel stair gate and a couple of plug covers.
  • More changes of clothes than seems reasonable.
  • A small first-aid kit with infant paracetamol and a thermometer.
  • Snacks for the journey — and the recovery period after it.

Finally, lower the bar for what counts as a good day. With the under-threes, a calm beach morning and an afternoon nap is a win. Everything else is a bonus.
